Pet Subjects

Every one of us has our pet subjects, those things that irritate us or a passion for something that we just loved to go on about whenever we can. Thankfully it is our persistence harping on, that often get things changed for the better. Of course you will never please everyone all the time - indeed it would be foolish to even try. Just like most people I have my fair share as well. Many of you will heard me speak about some of them.

Recently I was asked what some of them were, so I decided to add a section here on my web site to highlight them.  Over the next few weeks I will add information about each one, and probably a number of new ones as they occur.

Here are some of them:-

  • Businesses that ignore the values and experience of older people. Today we seemed to be focussed on formal qualification, which in many positions mean very little. Work place training, mentoring and guidance are, in most businesses, their intention, but in practise they are very poor at delivery!

  • The British Government and politicians make new laws that are pointless. You must not smack your child! Good parents know that at times smacking a child is necessary. Bad parents will ignore any law! Businesses are not supposed to consider age or afflictions when employing someone, but of course an employer is permitted to employ exactly who they want.

  • Businesses that insist of developing the weaknesses of individuals rather than their strengths even when the evidence shows that developing strengths pays huge dividends. Most companies do not even know, or want to know what a persons real strengths are - they just want the job done!

  • Supermarkets for the way that they are contributing to global warming, destruction of British Farms, erosion of local communities, reduction in consumer choice etc. Yes they are improving and hopefully they will eventually use the huge power they have to rectify some of these issues.

  • Hotels, especially the bigger chains, who believe they offer impeccably service and fair prices, but actually offer very little other than over heated smelly rooms, poor quality food, mediocre service and overall not much of an experience.

  • Businesses that take advantage of their own monopolistic position and take great pleasure in milking their customers in the name of profit. Recently the annual results of one or two petrol and gas companies just highlights this.

  • Politicians that are only interested in their own terms of office and their future, rather than addressing the real issues such as the environment, global warming, the exhaustion of minerals and fossil fuels, longer term employment .... I could go on and on! If you choose to be elected to represent the people, then that is what you should do. The only time I have ever seen my local politician or councillor is when they are canvassing for my vote!

  • The general breakdown in family values and the destruction of communities resulting in more crime, knife and guns, gangs and gang warfare ... these are partly our fault, and we need to realise it and do something about it.

  • Why do we insist on having a job that involves travelling, even miles or tens of miles every day. Why can’t we employ people locally. This would save the environment, reduce the destruction of our now limited fuel resources and probably help our health, if we walked or cycled to work!

  • Recruitment companies and HR departments that assume that we can sell ourselves in a two page CV.  They say that the CV is just a route to getting an interview. My experience is that you select candidates from their CV’s and then when you interview them you discover they are totally different people!

Now having read this list you might think I am some form of nutter, always on my horse, always shouting my head off, always stirring up trouble. Well that is far from the truth, but I do believe that if we want to make this world a better place for all now, and not destroy it for future generations then we should ALL take responsibility, and if necessary shout about it a bit!

Finally, I know that some who read this will have a response.  Yes, I know there are many different views on all these subjects, but these are my opinions and short of writing a book on each of them, that is the way it will probably stay!
